Canopy; The Hidden Life of Humans is an interdisciplinary research-creation project that rebirths civilization up in the trees. Aerial villages and sky gardens will be created using a mixture of organic vine structures and tendrils, metal frames, and hand-made artisan objects. It is inspired by the whimsical properties of Cucurbit vines and how they entwine with fences, neighboring plants, and their own tendrils alike. This project is a harmonious depiction of humans and nature. It explores a fundamentally reversed-flow of human activity (existing from the top-down rather than the ground-up). With our bodies lifted off the ground, we perch above and surrender to the leaves; we give these mighty terrestrial, and sacred beings the space to heal centuries of human-imposed abuse. “Nature versus nurture” becomes “nature via nurture” .
