The fourth annual Study in Action conference was an undergraduate initiative designed to link students and community activism.
The conference was a space for undergraduate students to present research, develop greater knowledge of social and environmental issues and build ties with community organizations. Workshops by community organizations will allow students to make tangible links between university education and community issues.
Organized by a collective of students through QPIRG Concordia, the conference was held from March 12th to 14th 2010. Study in action presented an opening panel entitled “OTHER INCOVENIENT TRUTHS: Beyond “Sustainability”, towards environmental justice.” The opening panel speakers included Gord Hill, Indigenous (Kwakwaka’wakw) artist and organizer, author of 500 Years of Indigenous Resistance”, and member of the Olympics Resistance Network, Sharmeen Khan, an environmental justice and anti-racist activist, writer and researcher, Poya Saffari, a farmer and activist with le Co-op Jardins de la résistance & Solidarity Across Borders, and Catherine St-Arnaud-Babin, a queer feminist activist and ex-squatter, member of the eco-radical collective Liberterre.
